Solution Focused Therapy
"
Although eclectic in my therapeutic approach I am dedicated to providing Solution Focused Therapy that is sensitive to your individual needs. Combining evidence based strategies (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a solution-focused approach we will collaboratively focus on your resources in the here and now in order to solve current problems in a solution oriented manner. Focussing predominantly on problems and their point of origin somewhere in the past can weaken your potential of personal growth and change. I use respectful curiosity to invite you to envision your preferred future and together we will attend to any moves towards it whether these are small increments or large changes. I am dedicated to providing efficient psychological services so that you can achieve the changes in your life that you desire."
"My aim is to work towards positive changes in a collaborative way. My therapeutic approach is caring and gentle, and grounded firmly in evidence-based principles."
Solution focused therapy concentrates on the individual's worldview and seeks to identify intra-systemic and therefore system-compatible solutions. It is assumed that change is the only constant factor in our lives and consequently change is inevitable.
Hence solutions as exceptions to the problem are always already given and need to be identified in a collaborative approach. Attending to already existing moves towards an agreed goal whether these are small increments or large changes will lead to individually customized and effective solutions.
Solution focused therapy claims that we don't need to fully understand a problem and it's origins in order to find solutions to it. Focussing predominantly on problems and their point of origin somewhere in the past can weaken our potential of personal growth and our ability to change. Hence overly problem focussed strategies may prevent what they were aiming for.

Substance Use Disorder
Many of us will be familiar with the pleasure of having a beer on a Friday after work with mates or appreciate a glass of wine with dinner. Such enjoyments may remain harmless and have rather the potential to enrich our life. Therefore Substance Use Disorder must be clearly distinguished from the harmless use of a substance in order to pleasurably relish life.
Substance Use Disorder refers to the overindulgence in and psychological and physical dependence on a psychoactive substance leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical or mental health or to the welfare of others and that may lead to legal problems.
In other terms Substance Use Disorder refers to individuals who continue to use a given substance despite their own best interest. For example smoking cigarettes despite well-researched adverse health effects.
" In my clinical experience Substance Use Disorder is often a way of self medication. People usually firstly try to solve their problems on their own and they do that by means that they believe to be successful and/or that are rooted in our culture. In this sense Substance Use is a coping strategy in the absence of a more successful solution.
The process in which a given individual enters the vicious circle of Substance Abuse and/or Dependence varies with the substance, the frequency of use, the means of ingestion, the intensity of pleasure or euphoria and the individual's genetic and psychological susceptibility."
" Chronic progression of Substance Abuse leads to increased harm as the behaviour starts to impact negatively on more and more areas of the individual's life. Clients report ambivalent feelings and thoughts about giving up and about continuing their substance using behaviour. Individuals express immense suffering and yet their motivation to change may remain fluctuant over time."
"Partners, family members and friends of individuals who suffer from a Substance Use Disorder report feelings of despair when they are condemned to helplessly watch the chronic progressive decline of
their loved ones. They are willing to do almost everything in order to help. Thus their motivation for change often exceeds the individual's readiness, which inevitably causes further conflict and grief."
"I offer confidential and effective evidence based treatment for Substance Use Disorders and I will combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques with Solution Focused Therapy in a collaborative approach. Our main target will be to stop or to reduce the proble- matic substance consumption. I offer caring and supportive psy- chological treatment for any underlying or co-existing difficulties as needed so that you can achieve the changes in your life that you desire."
"Due to my strong clinical background in Substance Use Disorders I am well equipped to offer specialist advice and gentle support to partners, family members and friends of individuals who suffer from Substance Use Disorder. I offer advice and caring support in difficult times."

Pathological Gambling
Everyone loves to pick a winner and many people enjoy a bet on the horses or the dogs, or to try their luck on the lottery, the pokies or in the casino. But sometimes they spend more time and money on gambling than they can afford. If this happens week after week then this indicates that there is a problem developing. The sooner treatment is sought out the better.
"Clients have told me that they knew that their gambling behaviour had become problematic when they found themselves in front of the pokies although they had lost the enjoyment that they used to get out of gambling. When financial problems kept escalating and they found that they were constantly chasing their losses and they had tried several times to cut back or give up gambling but couldn't, they then started to realise that harmless fun had turned into problem gambling. Clients talk about feeling very guilty about the harm that they have caused their families and friends. They report arguing with their partners over money or over less quality time spent with their families, that gambling was hurting them financially and socially."
It is very common for gamblers to feel that they should keep gambling until they win back their losses. As their debts get bigger, they start to spend more and more time thinking about how to find more money, so they can win back what they have lost and fix things up. As they are preoccupied with chasing their losses their thinking can become distorted and they don't think clearly about other things in their life any more. Their performance at work can drop off, and they may withdraw from family life. The guilt and distress they feel can make them try to hide the problems by lying to partners, family and friends. Embezzlement of money may occur.
"Pathological gambling usually impacts very negatively on partners, family and friends. Distraught family members talk about their loved ones isolating and distancing themselves from everyone. Financial hardship occurs and sometimes families are even confronted with legal charges due to problem gambling."
"I offer confidential and effective evidence based treatment for pathological gambling and I will combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy strategies with Solution Focused Therapy in a collaborative approach. Our main target will be to stop the problem gambling and to address pressing financial and/or legal problems. In addition to that I offer caring and supportive psychological treatment for any underlying or co-existing difficulties as needed so that you can achieve the changes in your life that you desire."
"Due to my clinical background in pathological gambling I am well equipped to offer specialist advice and gentle support to partners, family members and friends of problem gamblers. I offer advice how to best protect yourself, your money and your property from further harm and how to best encourage the pathological gambler to seek professional help."

Adjustment Disorder
Stressful situations and life events are a normal part of everyone's life and we are usually well equipped to cope with those. But when we are confronted with one or even several significant stressors at once, this may cause significant changes in our lives and symptoms of Adjustment Disorder can develop.
Adjustment Disorder refers to a psychological disturbance that develops in response to significant Change, a stressful life event and/or severe physical illness. Symptoms of Adjustment Disorder are a result of emotional pain and distress and they can impact on family relationships and work performance. Examples for stressful life events are: Death of a loved one, separation/divorce, emigration, seeking refuge, accidents, physical attack, bankruptcy, environmental catastrophe, unemployment, severe physical illness and similar events.
"Emigration has been identified as a stressful life event that induces significant change. Thus symptoms of Adjustment Disorder can develop in response to Emigration. The more commonly used term "culture shock" refers to the fact that cultural differences are at first often a source of conflict rather than of enrichment. Although variations occur with individual conditions of emigration most emigrants pass through phases of euphoria ("Everything is exciting") and of frustration feeling home sick ("Everything sucks—I want to go home").
"Clients suffering from Adjustment Disorder report extensive periods of worrying and anxiousness. They feel unable to cope with the situation and "nervous breakdown" can occur.
Individuals experience uncharacteristic and prolonged periods of Depression, Anxiety, feeling tense, frustration, despair, irritability and sometimes aggression as well as sleeping disorders."
"I provide solution focused and resource oriented, caring and supportive counselling during difficult times in your life. Our main target will be to identify coping strategies and to enhance social support. Due to my cultural background I am well equipped to offer specialist advice for Adjustment Disorder as a result of emigration."
